What you need to know about campus social life series. {8}

Nicole goes to Tulane. I know she takes her studies very seriously and loves to have fun. She manages to strike a balance.

Sunkissed girl, Senior pictures, New Jersey

HOW I MET MY CLOSEST FRIENDS: Orientation and in the beginning everyone was super open to meeting new people! Tulane also has a riverboat cruise that I met some of my current best friends because we were the only ones who actually danced on the dance floor!

DORM ADVICE: Be friendly with your floor, y’all are living together all year. It’s nice to have friends in your building! Get a comfy rug bc rooms are so small, seating is very limited, everyone ends up lying around on the beds and ground when hanging out.

DORM, GREEK, OTHER: The Boot is most popular (and 18+) and Greek.

A TYPICAL WEEKEND IS: Going to the Fly Park (on the Mississippi River); tailgates during football season; nights at the boot or frat parties (sororities also have a lot of mixers and date parties); Sundays dedicated to the library.

LATE NIGHT CRAVING: Boot pizza and Canes.

CLUBS: I’m in Chi Omega sorority, Delta Sigma Pi (business frat) and do a lot of volunteering because Tulane has a huge emphasis on community service my favorite was at an animal shelter.

MOST FUN CAMPUS TRADITION: Mardi Gras

FAVORITE DISCOVERY ON/OFF CAMPUS: Hillel has great food on campus and off campus just the entire city of New Orleans is amazing but love the Fly and Magazine Street.

STUDY TIP: As soon as you get your syllabus fill out everything in a planner.

SECRET STUDY SPOT: I’m a library kind of girl but also some really cool coffee shops near campus, Rue de la Course is my favorite. Pro tip during finals…when Howie Tulane Library is packed, Loyola’s is always way less full and we have access to it.

BEST CUP OF COFFEE: Rue de la Course.

MOST RECENT GOOGLE SEARCH: Zulu (Mardi Gras parade)

MOST USED APP: Instagram

HOMESICKNESS: Super easy to keep in touch – FaceTime and phone calls.

SKYPE OF FACETIME: Facetime

Andrea is a double major in Health Administration and Human Resource Management at Rutgers.

HOW I MET MY CLOSEST FRIENDS: Jane was a girl who lived on my floor my freshman year and the first day of school I went into her room and introduced myself and asked her to the dining hall! We are such great friends and live together now.

DORM ADVICE: Its a very small space, keep things clean and respect your roommate or things can get very awkward.

DORM, GREEK, OTHER: I decided to become a founder of a sorority on campus and it was the best decision I ever made. I met so many amazing women and left my mark on the Rutgers community. (More on this in another post!)

A TYPICAL WEEKEND IS…hanging out with friends either watching movies or going out to frat parties and dancing!

LATE NIGHT CRAVING: I’ve never had a fat sandwich but I hear those are all the rage. I’m a classic mozzarella sticks and french fries gal.

MOST FUN CAMPUS TRADITIONS: Football games. Even though we lose almost every game it is still so much fun tailgating and showing our Rutgers Pride.

FAVORITED DISCOVERY ON/OFF CAMPUS

STUDY TIP: Don’t leave anything until the last minute because you always feel bad for those people who have to pull an all nighter the day before an exam, don’t be one of them!

SECRET STUDY SPOT: The Seminary Place library, or the academic building.

BEST CUP OF COFFEEGerlandas Coffee is hands down the best on campus. The barista knows my name personally and my order, don’t know whether to be embarrassed or proud!

MOST RECENT GOOGLE SEARCH: How to calculate GPA.

MOST USED APP: Sakai or my Rutgers app that tells you when the busses are coming what the dining hall is serving and teachers post all announcements homework and quizzes.

HOMESICKNESS: My parents are definitely not proficient in the technology area so it was usually just a phone call. When they were feeling really sentimental they would have my brothers FaceTime me. I do come home a lot though because I’m not too far!

SKYPE OR FACETIME: Facetime

LAST TIME I DID LAUNDRY: Last time I was home lol!

Lauren attends Colgate, swims and as you can tell from below, a horseback rider.

Kinnelon-teen-portrait

HOW I MET MY CLOSEST FRIENDS: The swim team and on my floor in my dorm. It’s easiest to become close to people you are constantly around.

DORM ADVICE: Keep an open door and be friendly. It’s really easy to get close to people on your floor. In regards to roommates, I know most people say “you just have to be able to get along” and I think that is true. Personally, my 2 roommates are my best friends. I didn’t find adjusting to living with people to be too hard.. it’s all about being easy going.

DORM, GREEK, OTHER: Our social scene is split between Greek and house parties, but you don’t have to be involved in Greek life in order to go out. A lot of sports teams have houses/ apartments that they host things in. We have one bar called the Jug that serves to 18+ (No one is really sure how this exists, but it does).

A TYPCIAL WEEKEND IS: A balance between being in the library or being out.

CLUB FAVORITES: Every athlete needs to be part of this volunteer program called “Adopt-a-Classroom” where we spend an hour or so at the local elementary school. This is the only “club” I’m involved in, but I love it.

LATE NIGHT CRAVING: Oh boy.. our dining hall is open 24/7 so late night eating is very prevalent and very dangerous (haha) Starting at 10, Chef Ed makes unbeatable french toast and his own “Ed burgers”.

MOST FUN CAMPUS TRADITIONS: The number 13 is our lucky number (Colgate was founded by 13 men with $13 and our address has #13) It’s fun to recognize many “13” related things on campus and every Friday the 13th is Colgate Day!

FAVORITE DISCOVERY ON/OFF CAMPUS: We have (what used to be) a ski hill on campus that has really pretty hiking trials off of it.

STUDY TIP: Start assignments early. While there isn’t daily homework like high school, you do have to study every day and work on papers/projects very far in advance in order to do well.

SECRET STUDY SPOT: In the science center next to my dorm. They leave the classrooms open at night so my friends and I like to take one and study together.

BEST CUP OF COFFEE: Saxbys!

MOST USED APP: Instagram

HOMESICKNESS: I missed my family the most leading up to breaks. I text my sister and parents almost everyday and call them whenever I miss them a lot. Having a family group chat is a fun way to stay in touch.

SKYPE OR FACETIME: Facetime!

LAST TIME I DID LAUNDRY: I actually did laundry today 🙂

Sorry for such long answers, talking about college is so fun 🙂

Christina goes to West Virginia University and I know she’s loving school!

HOW I MET MY CLOSEST FRIENDS: My best friend in college is my roommate but otherwise I met my best friends through Greek life. I know Greek life sounds kind of cliché but I highly recommend joining Greek Life because I met so many more people in other sororities and fraternities.

DORM ADVICE: Always keep your room clean. Definitely add the lights and tapestry cause your dorm is your home and if it isn’t cute you’re not gonna want to stay in it. Also try to make friends with every one on your floor for a better time. Lastly, become friends with your RA because they can become a good source for advice.

DORM, GREEK, OTHER: Definitely Greek. There is nothing better than frat row. Going to the fraternity houses is always my favorite and it is just a better way to meet more people.

A TYPICAL WEEKEND IS: Going out with all my friends and sorority sisters to either a frat house or a club and dancing our nights away having a blast. Also in college the weekend starts on Thursdays (lol).

CLUB FAVORITES: I love to go to the clubs Lux and also Whisper. It’s always so much fun because we usually have socials there and it’s a great way to meet people.

LATE NIGHT CRAVING: Usually Clutch which is a wing shop that delivers. I usually get wings with their famous clutch sauce along with mac and cheese with bacon sour cream and peppers. My roommate and I get it at 12 all the time.

MOST FUN CAMPUS TRADITION: After every win for any type of game, it is tradition to sing Country Roads by John Denver. Whenever we sing it I always get the chills because it is such a proud moment for all Mountaineers.

FAVORITE DISCOVERY ON/OFF CAMPUS: There is a place called Los which is off campus. They have the best Spanish food and drinks. My favorite place on campus is a downtown restaurant called Lotsa Mozza. They have make your own brick oven pizza. Everyone loves it.

STUDY TIP: Never wait till the last minute to study because then you will be stressed out and most likely do bad on that exam. Always do homework the day it is assigned so you’re not in a rush. Also, Quizlet will become your best friend.

SECRET STUDY SPOT: I usually go to the library which is a 5-minute walk and rent a study room with my friends. We put our favorite music on and all study together and have fun fooling around during study breaks. We sometimes stay there till 2 in the morning.

BEST CUP OF COFFEE: In the library café called Eliza’s. I usually get a medium white chocolate latte, iced when it’s hot out and hot when it’s cold out. I sometimes drink four of those in one night they are so good.

MOST RECENT GOOGLE SEARCH: Alpha Phi clothes.

MOST USED APP:Definitely Uber. My mom yells at me for how much money I spend on the app.

HOMESICK: I thought about how they would be happier to see me at school and having fun and getting an education. I also thought about how boring it would be to stay at home.

SKYPE OF FACEBOOK: Facetime 100%.

LAST TIME I DID LAUNDRY:Last Monday.

Delaney is a sophomore at Tulane and LOVES it!

High School pictures, sunlit, boho style

HOW I MET MY CLOSEST FRIENDS: We lived on the same floor freshman year!

DORM ADVICE: Don’t stress about it. Communal living is a lot more fun/less gross than you anticipate, and whether you love or hate your roommate doesn’t make or break your experience freshman year.

DORM, GREEK, OTHER: None… all of NOLA.

FAVORITE CLUB: ??? like a club to dance in or be involved in LOL!! need clarification!

A TYPICAL WEEKEND IS: A perfect balance of studying and exploring all New Orleans has to offer.

MOST FUN CAMPUS TRADITIONS: Crawfest for sure (the largest student-run music festival in the country)!!!

FAVORITE DISCOVERY ON/OFF CAMPUS:  On campus: The Woldenberg Art Center’s ever-changing gallery. off campus: that’s too hard! I truly love New Orleans so much and there are so many magical places hidden in this city.

STUDY TIP:  TIME. MANAGEMENT. Breaking work into small sections instead of studying 2 nights before a huge exam is a life saver.

SECRET STUDY SPOT: LBC quiet room

BEST CUP OF COFFEE: oh god. literally everywhere around here. Mojo Coffee House, Rue De La Course, Stumptown Coffee, and Willa Jean are a few of my favorites.

MOST RECENT GOOGLE SEARCH: llamas vs. alpacas. (I might have to go back to Delaney and ask her a little bit more about this one:)!!
