Focusing on the now.

This is a repost from last year that I think will help all those parents of seniors starting or in the midst of the campus visits. Good luck!

I’ve spent the past few days driving, more or less, in a circle. We’ve been on the college visit circuit, sitting through presentations, taking tours, asking questions…The car rides have given me a lot of time to think and despite the length of some of these trips it has given me more time. More quality time to spend with my son and more time to prepare myself for him to eventually leave.  It gives us a chance to talk about both the mundane and the heartfelt and for me to completely focus on our time together.  There are more of those car rides and flights coming up which I’m now looking forward to. I apologize in advance if I’ve fallen behind on posting or taken a bit more time to get back to you but I’ve got a son right now who needs me as much as I need him.

What you need to know about campus social life series {6}

Lauren attends Colgate, swims and as you can tell from below, a horseback rider.

HOW I MET MY CLOSEST FRIENDS: The swim team and on my floor in my dorm. It’s easiest to become close to people you are constantly around.

DORM ADVICE: Keep an open door and be friendly. It’s really easy to get close to people on your floor. In regards to roommates, I know most people say “you just have to be able to get along” and I think that is true. Personally, my 2 roommates are my best friends. I didn’t find adjusting to living with people to be too hard.. it’s all about being easy going.

DORM, GREEK, OTHER: Our social scene is split between Greek and house parties, but you don’t have to be involved in Greek life in order to go out. A lot of sports teams have houses/ apartments that they host things in. We have one bar called the Jug that serves to 18+ (No one is really sure how this exists, but it does).

A TYPCIAL WEEKEND IS: A balance between being in the library or being out.

CLUB FAVORITES: Every athlete needs to be part of this volunteer program called “Adopt-a-Classroom” where we spend an hour or so at the local elementary school. This is the only “club” I’m involved in, but I love it.

LATE NIGHT CRAVING: Oh boy.. our dining hall is open 24/7 so late night eating is very prevalent and very dangerous (haha) Starting at 10, Chef Ed makes unbeatable french toast and his own “Ed burgers”.

MOST FUN CAMPUS TRADITIONS: The number 13 is our lucky number (Colgate was founded by 13 men with $13 and our address has #13) It’s fun to recognize many “13” related things on campus and every Friday the 13th is Colgate Day!

FAVORITE DISCOVERY ON/OFF CAMPUS: We have (what used to be) a ski hill on campus that has really pretty hiking trials off of it.

STUDY TIP: Start assignments early. While there isn’t daily homework like high school, you do have to study every day and work on papers/projects very far in advance in order to do well.

SECRET STUDY SPOT: In the science center next to my dorm. They leave the classrooms open at night so my friends and I like to take one and study together.

BEST CUP OF COFFEE: Saxbys!

MOST USED APP: Instagram

HOMESICKNESS: I missed my family the most leading up to breaks. I text my sister and parents almost everyday and call them whenever I miss them a lot. Having a family group chat is a fun way to stay in touch.

SKYPE OR FACETIME: Facetime!

LAST TIME I DID LAUNDRY: I actually did laundry today 🙂

Sorry for such long answers, talking about college is so fun 🙂

August Break

August is just around the corner which means it’s family time for me. My first is off to college and as you can see we’re pretty close. This month is for him, my daughter who will be celebrating her sweet sixteen and of course Mr. Paige P.  If you don’t have pictures of you with your family, this is the month to do it. Find a family photographer who can capture your relationships exactly the way that they are.  If you’re interested in booking a senior photoshoot with me please know that I’m available beginning in September (which is filling up) Take some time this month to play with the ones you love. Happy August!

Summer nights at the carnival

They were five girls with a fistful of tickets on a perfect July night at the local carnival. The only decisions to be made were which rides and do we go for the cotton candy now or later? When it did come for cotton candy time they were going to give it to us in a bag! We all looked at each other, more or less in shock and then asked for it on a stick. Eating cotton candy out of a bag?!?! Off the stick is far more fun! Thanks to Urban Club clothing for the super cute dresses and tops!

Catie & Lauren R. {Senior Pictures: Kinnelon NJ}

I know I’ve mentioned before how much I love photoshoots with sisters. This one with twins Catie and Lauren was no different. We had originally scheduled this for the winter but ended up rescheduling it to one of those unusual days in early spring when the weather was actually cooperating and it felt like early summer.

It sounds odd but there is almost a rhythm that twins/triplets have with each other. It’s not something I can place my finger on but it’s a give and take that is almost rhythmical. I experienced it with Bri and Johnna last year also. I find it fascinating. There’s a comfort level between them that makes the entire shoot extremely calm.

Wistfully, their mom had said they had their portraits when they were babies and now as seniors before they’re off to college this coming fall to 2 different schools.

Happy Fourth of July!

All it took was a few American flags, a wide open field and a sun-kissed summer evening to get our photoshoot underway. From all of “my” freespirits to yours… have a happy Fourth of July!

Becky G. {Senior Photoshoot: Denville, NJ}

Senior picture of Blue-eyed girlI think if I gave you three guesses to name the sport that Becky is involved in you probably wouldn’t even come close. When I first heard her say it in casual conversation I asked her to repeat it because I thought she was kidding me. It was during hair and makeup. The music was playing and we’re (Michelle/hair and makeup artist, Taylor/my assistant, Becky and I) are chatting. It was Michelle who asked Becky if she’s involved in any sports or clubs. Ready for a guess?…It’s not gymnastics, soccer or volleyball. It also is not track, swimming or skiing. RUGBY!! Yes, rugby. I don’t know a whole lot about rugby but I didn’t even think girls played that sport! Becky is a beautiful blonde with a huge personality. She’s excited for everything and anything. Really. I could tell her we’re going to sit in the mud and she would say I’m sooooo excited! So maybe that’s the personality of a rugby player, I don’t know, but I’ll take it any day of the week.
